The Visionary Founder of Sagar Ratna
Jayaram Banan’s journey began in 1980 with a humble canteen, driven by determination and a passion for hospitality. What started as a small venture soon expanded into industrial canteens for leading companies such as Dabur and Tata Oil Mills, laying the foundation for something extraordinary.
His vision took shape with the opening of the first Sagar outlet in Defence Colony, New Delhi, which introduced authentic South Indian vegetarian cuisine. With its unmatched flavours and quality, it quickly became a household name for authentic, fresh and relishing South Indian delicacies.
His expertise later reached iconic destinations like Lodhi Hotel, Janpath Hotel, and Ashok Hotel, the premier hotel chains operating in New Delhi, further cementing his reputation as a pioneer and a visionary in the field of hospitality industry. Mr. Banan, after tasting success in the South Indian cuisines, diversified his operations with the introduction of North Indian and Chinese cuisines to the menu of Sagar Ratna.
Hailing from Karkala (Udupi), Mr. Banan planned to introduce his customers to the regional delicacies of his coastal town of Mangalore by launching Swagath for coastal and Mangalorean delicacies. He has mastered the art of diversification of the menu, by providing his customers with a varied range of cuisines under his different ventures: Shree Rathnam for authentic North Indian flavours, PJ Banan catering services, Swagath and Sagar Ratna, and Ocean Pearl Hotels offering luxurious stays and hospitality. Each of Mr. Banan’s business operations offer his innovative spirit.
In the year 2022, Mr. Banan was recognised with the prestigious Kannada Rajyotsava Award for his valuable contribution to the Hospitality industry for over decades.
